What can I expect from a consultation? This is likely to be different than anything else you've ever experienced. For the best assessment results, come with an open mind and a readiness to consider a new perspective! You can expect there to be some questions about your fitness, medical, and lifestyle history as well as questions regarding emotional and mental well being. We will also be assessing your gait and posture. If you are receiving your assessment online, please be sure to place the camera somewhere we can see you from head to toe.

What do I wear to a consultation? When it comes time to evaluate your posture and gait, we'll need to be able to see as much of your spine as possible. For the ladies, we recommend you wear an open back sports bra that doesn't extend past your bra line in length. For both men and women we recommend wearing shorts in order for our practitioner to evaluate your knee and ankle joints properly. Ladies, if you do not own shorts, tight workout pants such as leggings will work however you may be asked to roll them down to your hips if they are high waisted in order for our practitioner to access more of your spine. For men, please avoid baggy sweatpants whenever possible. If sweatpants are unavoidable, you'll be asked to roll them up past your knees so we can view your joints. No need to worry about shoes, we train barefoot here!

Can my spouse/child and I get a consultation together? We do our best to accommodate joint situations when long distance travel or care taking is involved, however, generally we do not allow joint consultations. We are all uniquely differentiated humans and what one person needs to hear isn't exactly what another person needs to hear, therefore our assessments can vary from person to person making it difficult to perform a combined assessment. We require all adults to have their own appointment. Children 10 and younger with no severe medical issues or physical misalignments do not need an assessment to join our kids classes. However, all children are required to have an assessment performed when 1:1 work is requested. Adults are required to have an assessment performed before joining regularly scheduled group classes of any kind.

Do I need to be "fit" before coming here? Not at all! We work with people of all ages and walks of life. Our 1:1 sessions are customized to each person's needs and our classes offer a series of regressions and progressions to ensure that everyone can follow along and be challenged at whatever level they need. We've had adults in their 70's follow along no problem! Just make sure to have an assessment done prior to joining a class so that we can ensure your safety and assist with choosing the right classes.
-
Do I need to sign up for class ahead of time? One of the many benefits to joining our monthly membership is that you can attend any class you'd like without having to sign up ahead of time! If you do not have a monthly membership, you will need to sign up online and pay the $30 drop-in fee prior to attending class. You can sign up through our website or the MxD "member" portal.

How come you don't list which practitioner teaches each class? We know you have your favorites, and it's easy to work with who you already know and are comfortable with, but we believe that each of our practitioners offers a unique perspective that is highly valuable to consider. So, we ask that you give everyone's class a visit at some point! We understand you may be nervous that an instructor will be "too hard", but trust us when we say that we have never had someone not be able to do a class. Everyone makes it through and they always feel so accomplished in the end! You're in good hands with each and every one of our practitioners.

Do you offer open gym?We understand that some members would enjoy using the space to get homework done that was assigned in their 1:1 sessions or practice moves that were difficult for them in class. However, at this time we are unable to provide access to equipment and/or the movement space for individual use. Nevertheless, we do offer our monthly members and 1:1 clients access to recovery equipment before/after sessions as well as before evening classes or after morning classes.

I've worked out a ton in the past, why is this movement so much harder?Traditional fitness modalities tend to isolate parts of the body. At Movement By Design, we take an integrated approach to our training that requires you to recruit as much musculature and fascial tissue as you can to facilitate a motion, all while holding proper spinal alignment. In other words, you use the entirety of your body to move. This not only yields better tensegrity of the human structure but also more efficient elastic recoil. Since you've likely never trained this way, it will feel much harder than other fitness modalities you've experienced.
-
Why do all the movements look so foreign? Most movement modalities are based on training the body in isolation. At Movement By Design, we train the human as a human. We utilize a more integrated approach to movement since most of the motions humans do ARE integrated. Concepts like contralateral reciprocation are prevalent in our movements since we use it every day; to walk, run, throw, and fight.
